Sustainability

A sustainable self-catering accommodation provider adopts business practices that leave a positive impact on the environment and society.  It is our aim to support and engage as much as possible so that we minimise and neutralise our impact on our world.  Recycling in the UK has become normalised behaviour with *90% of UK citizens regularly recycling.  Let's keep this going whilst on holiday too.

  • We buy our electricity from the UK's biggest green supplier Octapus, (Bulb) and they provide both Lazy Days Cottage and Moonfleet House with 100% renewable electricity from solar, wind and hydro sources.  The objective of Bul is to make energy simpler, cheaper and greener.
  • Moonfleet House has had a full suite of solar panels installed which will reduce the carbon footprint and produce a clean and green source of renewable energy with no greennhouse gas or carbon emissions.  It is estimated that this will save over one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2e) from entering the atmosphere every year.
  • As a gift to guests at Lazy Days Cottage and Moonfleet House, we offer free bottled water on arrival.  If you would like to consume your water then simply reuse your water bottle throughout your visit and when you are done, place the cap back on the bottle and put them in blue recycle wheelie bin. That way, both the cap and bottle can be guaranteed to enter the recycling loop providing valuable feedstock for the recycling industry.
  • All glass, cardboard, cans and most plastics can be put into the blue recycle bin. As a rule of thumb, if the plastic remains scrunched when made into a ball, it is recyclable.  Most supermarkets will take flexible packaging back so check the OPRL instructions on the back of pack and remember to return it to front of store.
  • Separate bins are provided in the kitchen to allow for refuse segregating and enhanced recycling.   Be careful not to contaminate the bins as 9 out of 10 households typically dispose of an item in the recycling that is not accepted. However, if you are unsure about the recyclability of an item then check out this great website WRAP for further details on recycling in the UK or there is an easy search function to be even more precise.
  • Waste is an inevitable part of life, and recycling only helps if it’s handled properly.  As well as careful waste segregation for the bins, we suggest that guests remove uneaten food and take it home or for unopened items, please offer it to a food bank.  There is a food bank collection point at Tacons Farm Shop, a basket in the porch of St Margaret’s Church in Martham or phone 01493 740823, email martham.rectory@btinternet.com.
  • Throughout 2022 and into 2023, both properties have had significant investment in their double glazing to further improve their energy efficiencies.  Lazy Days Cottage has had all its windows replaced and Moonfleet House has received a stunning bespoke glazed rear door and ceiling feature.  Further work is planned for 2024.
  • Minimise power and water usage especially with the current soaring costs. Sustainability isn’t just reducing waste, it also means reducing CO2emissions and water usage:
    • Switch off appliances when they are not being used.
    • Consider how much water is needed for showers, tooth brushing and baths.
    • Turn down/off heating on leaving the property.
    • Switch off lights when leaving the property.
  • Booking.com has recognised our efforts and we have been awarded a Travel Sustainable badge, their new programme created to champion efforts like these.  The sustainability practises that have been introduced have been acknowledged and we wear this badge with pride.
  • Brand new ev charger installations.  Lazy Days Cottage and Moonfleet House now boast new ev chargers to the rear of the parking space to satisfy the needs of savvy ev guests.  Alavailable on a pay-as-you-go basis.
