Things To Do and Places To Visit

General Information

Walks and Runs

In addition to the stunning beach/dune walks there are several varied countryside walks, straight from your front door.  This wonderful local information guide has details of 5 different routes that start/end in Winterton and range from a comfortable 1.5 mile walk around the village to an 11 mile round trip to Horsey.  Most of these are also suitable to run and a personal favourite is along Low Road towards Somerton, past the ruins of St Mary's church and beyond on concrete paths to the flat countryside.  If you are a keen walker, there are OS maps in both properties for you to enjoy.

The Broads is a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes which were formed by the flooding of peat workings covering an area of 117 sq mi with over 120 mi of navigable waterways. There are seven rivers and 63 broads, mostly less than 4 metres (13 ft) deep.  Winterton is a perfect starting point for a Broads trip and there are many boat hire companies or river boat options available.  Our favourite is Martham Ferry Boat Yard located only a few miles away in Martham with boats powered by electric and diesel, available all year round – by the 1/2 day, day or week. Also recommended are Broads Tours in Wrohxam for day hire or river trips and Simpson's Boatyard in Stalham.

Winterton Church

From Easter to September, (weekends) the church of Holy Trinity and All Saints is open to visitors to scale the 136 feet to the top of the tower.  The church is of course also open for worship: Parish Mass is at 9am on a Sunday and the church is open daily between 9am and 6pm - or until dusk in winter.  It has a corner dedicated to the memory and heritage of the fishing fleet of Winterton.  Nets from one of the last fishing boats that made a living from the beach hang from the walls as well as a crucifix carved from ships' timbers.

Beach and Dunes

Winterton beach and dunes are less than a 5 minutes walk from Lazy Days Cottage and Moonfleet House.  The beach is dog friendly year round which is wonderful for our furry friends.  The  Winterton-Horsey Dunes is a 1,060-acre biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a Special Area of Conservation.   The whole site is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  From November to January, the beaches at Horsey and Winterton are incredibly lucky to be home to some of the largest colonies of Grey Seals to be found anywhere.  However, seals are fragile and the area is wonderfully managed by the Friends of Horsey Seals.  Please take their advice, keep dogs on leads and keep your distance.

Norwich, the City of Stories is one of the most beautiful, historic cities in Britain. Unearth its hidden gems, iconic buildings, cosy pubs, attractions and wonderful shopping all around a 30 minute drive from Winterton.
